Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a trenchless method for installing underground pipes, conduits, and cables without the need for extensive excavation. This process minimizes surface disruption, making it an ideal solution for projects in urban and environmentally sensitive areas.
HDD uses a surface-based drilling rig to create a precise underground pathway. The process involves:
Drilling a Pilot Hole – A surface coil or walk-over steering system guides the drill bit along a predetermined path.
Material Removal – Material is extracted both hydraulically and mechanically using a drill pipe and bottom hole assembly (BHA), which consists of a drill bit, mud motor, and steering tool.
Hole Expansion – A reamer (or hole opener) increases the hole diameter to accommodate the required utility.
Utility Installation – Once the bore hole is ready, pipes, cables, or conduits are pulled through.
Hole Size & Distance: The diameter of the bore depends on the type of utility being installed. Smaller holes are used for cables or gas lines, while larger ones accommodate water mains and sewer pipes.
Drilling Distance:
Heavy rigs can drill up to 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) for large-scale projects.
Light rigs are suitable for distances ranging from 50 meters to 1,000 meters (164 to 3,281 feet).
A light rig can typically drill up to 400 meters in a 12-hour shift, though rocky terrain may slow progress.
Worksite Requirements: A light rig setup requires approximately 10 meters by 30 meters (33 feet x 98 feet) for the drilling rig, support truck, drill stem trailer, and water truck. Additional space may be needed for spoils disposal.
Setup Time: With proper site access, a light rig can be fully operational within an hour.
Operating Schedule: Standard operations run 12 hours a day, five days a week, with flexibility for special projects.
HDD is the preferred method for installing underground utilities in areas where traditional trenching is impractical. Common applications include:
Environmentally sensitive areas (rivers, lakes, wildlife habitats)
Urban infrastructure (roads, highways, intersections, parks, railways, golf courses)
Existing utility corridors (installing new lines without disturbing existing services)
Marine environments (desalination plants and other coastal applications)
Residential and commercial developments
Before HDD work can begin, the following must be in place:
Stamped trenchless design blueprints
Geotechnical investigation findings
Request for Proposal (RFP), if applicable
811 Timely Notice for utility location clearance
To ensure accuracy and prevent damage to existing underground utilities, light rigs use two primary steering systems:
Walkover System
Wireline System Both systems provide high precision, allowing HDD to be used in complex environments with minimal risk.
HDD generates waste in the form of excavated subsoil and bentonite, a natural drilling fluid derived from volcanic ash.
Small projects: Waste removal is handled during drilling.
Large projects: On-site disposal plans are required for larger volumes of bentonite and drill cuttings.
In addition to the drilling rig, a well-equipped HDD site includes:
Locator and Drill Beacon
Heavy-duty pick-up trucks (at least two)
Heavy-duty trailers (at least two)
Excavator
Water tank (minimum 500 gallons)
Directional drill safety equipment & protective clothing
Shovels & utility locators (recommended for enhanced safety)
Miscellaneous support tools
HDD operations generate significant noise, which can interfere with team communication. To ensure safe and effective coordination, Texas Underground Drilling uses the Sonetics SONPW3 Portable Wireless System, a high-quality noise-canceling headset that enables clear, hands-free communication among the drilling crew.
Texas Underground Drilling prioritizes safety and risk management. We maintain $5,000,000.00 in liability coverage limits, ensuring peace of mind for our clients.
Minimal Surface Disruption – Protects landscaping, roads, and existing infrastructure.
Highly Accurate Steering Systems – Ensures safe navigation around obstacles.
Efficient and Cost-Effective – Reduces labor and restoration costs compared to traditional trenching.
Flexible Scheduling – Our experienced team accommodates project-specific needs and timelines.
